Correct Answer : Option (C) - 107

India ranked 107th out of 121 assessed countries on the 2022 Global Hunger Index (GHI). With an overall score of 29.1 (see table below to understand the measurement), the level of hunger in India has been categorised as "serious".

India was ranked 101st out of 116 countries in the GHI 2021 and 94th out of 107 assessed countries in 2020.

The GHI that tracks and measures hunger across the world says that malnutrition among children under five years in India is very high.

The report that has used the fifth National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) and FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) Food Security Indicators as its sources for India has highlighted that child wasting (low-weight-for-height) rate in India, at 19.3 per cent, is the highest of any country in the world.

With 35.5 per cent of children below five years stunted (low height for age), India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan are among the worst-performing countries.

This has put India off-track regarding the progress needed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal of "Zero Hunger" (Goal 2) by 2030..

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru bettered its position in the Times Higher Education(THE) World University Rankings 2023 and was the only Indian university in the top 300 list.

The announcement came even as several IITs, including Delhi, Bombay, Kanpur, Madras, Kharagpur and Roorkee, continued to boycott the rankings for the third year in a row citing issues of 'transparency' in the ranking parameters.

But despite the boycott, seven IITs have made it this time. These are IIT Ropar (501-600), IIT Indore (601-800), IIT Gandhinagar ((801-1000), IIT Patna (801-1000), IIT Bhubaneswar (1001-1200, IIT Guwahati (1001-1200), which re-joined this year after its absence for two years, and IIT Mandi (1001-1200). Correct Answer : Option (B) - Abdul Latif Rashid

Note :

Lawmakers in Iraq have elected Kurdish politician Abdul Latif Rashid as the country’s new president, paving the way for the formation of a new government and ending a year of deadlock, even as rockets landed near the parliament building.

Rashid replaced fellow Iraqi Kurd Barham Saleh as head of state after the two-round vote in parliament on Thursday(13th Oct 2022), winning more than 160 votes against 99 for Saleh, an assembly official said. Saleh reportedly walked out of the parliament building as the votes were tallied.

Shia politician Mohammed Shia al-Sudani was quickly named prime minister-designate, assuming the task of reconciling feuding Shia factions and forming a government after a year of deadlock. Al-Sudani replaces caretaker Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhemi.

In Iraq’s power-sharing system, the presidency is reserved for Kurdish groups to nominate while the premiership falls under Shia blocs. The speaker of parliament is a Sunni.

Reporting from Baghdad, Al Jazeera’s Mahmoud Abdelwahed said the election of Rashid signals that “this chapter of rivalry has been concluded in the Iraqi parliament,” while noting that forming a government could still be an uphill battle..

Scientists on a mission to map the Maldivian atolls believe they have discovered a new ecosystem 500 metres deep in the Indian Ocean.

The ecosystem, now called 'The Trapping Zone', supports an oasis of life deep in the ocean. It’s hoped the discovery will lead to better protections for the sea life and fisheries in this unique area.

The Trapping Zone theory emerged after scientists on the Nekton Mission collected various biological samples, video evidence and extensive sonar mapping.

It all indicated that megafauna predators such as sharks and other large fish feed on swarms of small sea creatures called micro-nekton when they are trapped against the sea terraces at certain times of day..
